DAM PROUD: Massive American Flag Unfurled Over Hoover Dam For Historic Celebration

posted by Hannity Staff - 5.26.26

The Hoover Dam has become the backdrop for one of the largest patriotic displays in the country as officials unveiled a massive American flag over Memorial Day weekend ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday celebration.

Nevada and Arizona leaders gathered at the iconic landmark to unveil the enormous Stars and Stripes as part of the road to America250 festivities, transforming one of America’s most recognizable engineering marvels into a towering tribute to the nation.

The flag measures an astonishing 300 feet tall and 150 feet wide, roughly the size of a football field, making it one of the most ambitious patriotic installations ever mounted on a U.S. landmark.

As night falls, the display becomes even more dramatic.

The dam is illuminated in red, white, and blue, creating a striking visual visible across the Colorado River corridor. Organizers say the installation will remain in place through Independence Day, giving visitors more than a month to experience the spectacle.

“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, Nevada is proud to help tell the story of innovation, exploration, and progress that shapes our nation, from Hoover Dam to our growing technology and infrastructure sectors to the world-class tourism industry,” Republican Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo said in a statement.

“Nevada has always played an important role in American history.”

Lombardo also hailed Hoover Dam as a symbol of the American spirit.

“For generations, Hoover Dam has stood as one of the greatest engineering achievements in American history. It represents determination, ingenuity, hard work, and the willingness of Americans to take on challenges that once seemed impossible.”

The installation itself was a major engineering feat.

Organizers say the flag weighs roughly 2,000 pounds and required more than 500 pounds of additional sewing material to reinforce it for the demanding conditions along the dam’s face. Hundreds of rings were welded onto the banner, and crews spent five days preparing the flag before installation began.

The lighting system was equally ambitious.

More than 126,000 feet of wire and 550 automated LED lights were used to create the nighttime display. The system draws roughly 2,250 amps of electricity, powered entirely by Hoover Dam’s hydroelectric generation.

Installing the display required 30 lighting technicians and an astonishing 185 elevator trips to transport workers and equipment throughout the massive structure.

Democratic Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs also praised the project, tying the landmark to the broader American story.

“America’s promise has always been renewed by generations willing to make this country freer, safer, stronger, and more prosperous than they found it,” Hobbs said.

“That is the promise of America. And there is no greater testament to that spirit than Hoover Dam. Ninety years ago, in a time of hardship and uncertainty, Americans came together to build something the world had never seen. An iconic achievement of American infrastructure.”
