D.C. DETOUR: Mamdani Heads To Trump’s White House to Discuss 'Variety of Housing Projects': Report

Zo’s on the go.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made an unannounced trip to Washington, DC on Thursday to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House, according to The New York Post.

The visit was not listed on Mamdani’s public schedule.

Sources told The Post the sit-down — the mayor’s second face-to-face with Trump since his election — was expected to focus on “a variety of housing projects” that could become a historic federal investment in New York City.

Mamdani was seen boarding a Delta flight Thursday morning wearing a black hat and mask. He traveled with top adviser Morris Katz, who holds no formal role in City Hall.

City Hall reps declined to comment on the trip.

The meeting comes after Trump referenced Mamdani during his State of the Union address earlier this week, calling him “the new Communist mayor of New York City” while also saying, “I think he’s a nice guy. I speak to him a lot.”

In their first Oval Office meeting in late 2025, the two put aside months of public barbs and exchanged friendly remarks, focusing on shared goals such as housing and affordability despite significant ideological differences.

The context of the visit includes ongoing concerns over housing affordability, public safety, and other urban challenges that both leaders have discussed in past interactions.

In their earlier session, Trump acknowledged constructive dialogue with the mayor-elect despite their public disagreements, signaling a willingness to collaborate on issues affecting the nation’s largest city.

The surprise visit underscores a pragmatic streak for both leaders. For Mamdani, securing federal attention on housing could address a central issue for New Yorkers.

For Trump, engaging with an ideologically opposite mayor offers political leverage to frame himself as a unifier, even with opponents.
