Chirlane McCray -the wife of Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady of New York City- weighed-in Wednesday on the nationwide movement to defund police departments; describing a cop-free NYC as a “nirvana” and “utopia.”
“That would be like a nirvana, a utopia that we are nowhere close to getting to,” McCray said during a TIME100 Talks discussion.
“They can do things that would not be possible in a large city like New York,” McCray added, referring to the dismantling Minneapolis Police Department.
“You’re going to have police in New York City because it is needed for safety,” the mayor said, “but that doesn’t mean you can’t change policing.”
De Blasio’s daughter was arrested last week in Manhattan during anti-police demonstrations in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.

BACKLASH: NYPD Union Blasts De Blasio, Says Mayor’s Daughter an ‘Object-Throwing Rioting Anarchist’
The NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association ripped New York Mayor Bill de Blasio in a now-deleted tweet Monday; calling his daughter an “object throwing rioting anarchist” after learning of her arrest late Saturday night.
“How can the NYPD protect the city of NY from rioting anarchist when the Mayors object throwing daughter is one of them. Now we know why he is forbidding Mounted units to be mobilized and keeping the NYPD from doing their jobs,” read the SBA tweet.
Bill de Blasio said he was “proud” of his daughter after the 25-year-old was reportedly arrested in Manhattan for blocking traffic during citywide protests in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd.
“We asked her to recount the whole story. I love my daughter deeply, I honor her. She only wants to do good in the world. She believes a lot of change is needed. I’m proud of her that she cares so much that she’s willing to go out there and do something about it,” said de Blasio.
“She was acting peacefully. She believes that everything she did was in the spirit of respectful protest… I’ll let her speak for herself, but I admire that she was out there trying to change something that she thought was unjust,” he added.
