CAPITAL CLEAN-UP CONTINUES: Transportation Department to Take Over D.C.’s Union Station [WATCH]

The Trump administration announced Wednesday it will assume management of Washington, D.C.’s Union Station, expanding its federal oversight of the district.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the historic landmark had “fallen into disrepair” and hinted at redevelopment plans to restore it as “a point of pride.” The administration is weighing an expansion of the property as part of the project.

“We think that we can manage the property better,” Duffy said Wednesday, by bringing in more businesses that will help pay for improvements. He called it a “power play” in line with the takeover of city police: “We are going to make the investments to make sure that this station isn’t dirty, that we don’t have homelessness in Union Station.”

The announcement came just hours before Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy was scheduled to join the inaugural ride of Amtrak’s new Acela service between Washington, D.C., and Boston. His department has also assumed oversight of renovations at New York’s Penn Station, tapping Amtrak and former subway executive Andy Byford to lead the effort.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), a branch of the Transportation Department, has owned Union Station for 44 years, with the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation managing the property. Until last year, retail inside the station was run by a private real estate firm.

Union Station has struggled since the pandemic, when plummeting ridership, decaying infrastructure, and a surge in crime left the once-bustling hub in decline. Riders have increasingly cited concerns over safety, pointing to incidents involving individuals in mental health crisis.
