What a mess.
According to a Fox News report, M&M’s is ditching its popular candy-coated spokescandies after an attempt to placate the oke mob backfired and blew up in its face; actress Maya Rudolph will replace the candies.
From Fox News:
M&M’s dropped bittersweet news on Monday, announcing the “beloved spokescandies” are too polarizing and the cartoon chocolates would be put on an “indefinite pause” after widespread backlash to recent changes that were widely considered “woke.”
The candy maker has taken steps to become more inclusive, but those plans have melted away – at least until the Super Bowl on Feb. 12.
“America, let’s talk. In the last year, we’ve made some changes to our beloved spokescandies. We weren’t sure if anyone would even notice. And we definitely didn’t think it would break the internet. But now we get it – even a candy’s shoes can be polarizing. Which was the last thing M&M’s wanted since we’re all about bringing people together,” the company tweeted.
“Therefore, we have decided to take an indefinite pause from the spokescandies. In their place, we are proud to introduce a spokesperson America can agree on: the beloved Maya Rudolph,” the candy company continued. “We are confident Ms. Rudolph will champion the power of fun to create a world where everyone feels they belong.”

“You mean, your sales dipped after going woke and you don’t want to admit it outright?” tweeted Jason Rantz.

From EW:
The company is referring to the fact that, last year, the M&M’s spokescandies got a slightly different look in the spirit of “creating a world where everyone feels they belong and society is inclusive,” a brand statement said at the time. The changes were slight. The female-presenting Green M&M received the biggest of these minute changes: instead of thigh-high boots, she now has sneakers.
Some suspect that M&M’s is teasing a Super Bowl commercial with this stunt.
Stay tuned.
More over at The Wall Street Journal:
The M&M characters are taking a break a year after their new looks sparked controversy. Comedian Maya Rudolph will replace the candy characters—known as “spokescandies”—and will star in the candy’s upcoming Super Bowl advertisement.
