Heart-stopping body camera footage captured the moment brave New York City Police Department officers rescued a distressed woman dangling from the ledge of a Brooklyn skyscraper — talking her to safety before pulling her back over the roof more than 100 feet above the ground.
The dramatic rescue unfolded around 1:30 p.m. Thursday after police responded to a 911 call involving a woman in emotional distress at a Brooklyn high-rise, officials said.
When officers reached the roof, they discovered the sobbing woman perched dangerously close to the edge of the building.
The newly released footage shows officers immediately trying to calm her down as the tense standoff unfolded high above the city streets.
“We care about you. We don’t want to see you hurt yourself, OK?” one officer gently tells the woman while slowly approaching her and asking if he can hold her hand.
Moments later, officers from the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit arrived and quickly set up specialized safety equipment before climbing over the ledge to reach the woman directly.
The rescue operation unfolded with officers balancing on the narrow ledge while trying to gain the woman’s trust.
“We can sit here for 10 minutes. We can sit here for a half hour. I just want to make sure that you’re safe,” one officer calmly tells her while suspended more than 100 feet in the air.
At one point, the officer tried to ease the tension with humor.
“Look where we’re at. We have the best view of the city,” he joked while sitting beside the woman on the ledge.
The emotional breakthrough eventually came when the woman agreed to cooperate.
The footage shows the officers carefully working together to guide and lift her back over the edge and onto the safety of the rooftop as the team secured her with safety harnesses.
The dramatic rescue quickly drew praise online for the officers’ calm demeanor, patience, and willingness to risk their own safety to save a stranger in crisis.
