Democrats continue to dismantle Democracy.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is signaling that Democrats are quietly preparing for a political emergency in next year’s governor’s race.
Speaking Thursday during his budget presentation, Newsom acknowledged concerns that California’s unusual top-two primary system could theoretically allow two Republicans to advance to the general election if Democratic voters splinter badly enough among multiple candidates.
But the governor insisted he does not believe Democrats will be shut out.
“I do not see that scenario taking place,” Newsom said.
Still, Newsom revealed there is what he called a “break-the-glass” contingency plan waiting in the wings if Democratic leaders believe the race is heading toward disaster territory.
The governor declined to spell out exactly what that plan involves, but hinted that political operatives and party insiders are already gaming out ways to avoid a humiliating outcome in deep-blue California.
“There are many people who have a deep understanding of what it would look like if Democrats were locked out,” Newsom said.
The remarks come as Republicans attempt to capitalize on growing frustration over crime, homelessness, affordability and illegal immigration in California — issues the GOP believes are creating a rare opening in a state long dominated by Democrats.
Under California’s election system, all candidates appear on the same primary ballot regardless of party, with the top two finishers advancing to the general election.
