'BARELY A WORD': Dems and Media Silent on Slaying of Ukrainian Refugee on Charlotte Train

posted by Hannity Staff - 9.08.25

Liberal media and politicians are under fire for staying quiet after the savage murder of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, stabbed to death on a Charlotte light rail train by a career criminal with 14 prior arrests.

Horrific surveillance footage shows suspect Decarlos Brown Jr., 35, calmly unfolding a pocket knife behind Zarutska as she fiddles with her phone, unaware of the killer looming over her. The clip cuts just as Brown allegedly plunges the blade.

After the killing, Brown is seen wandering the Lynx Blue Line train, dripping blood across the floor with the weapon still in hand. At one point he peels off his bloody hoodie, then waits calmly for the next stop before walking off. Passengers nearby barely react.

The brutal attack happened Aug. 22. Yet in the aftermath, mainstream outlets and Democrat politicians have largely kept quiet — with Charlotte’s Democratic mayor even praising those who withheld the shocking footage.

“The video of the heartbreaking attack that took Iryna Zarutska’s life is now public. I want to thank our media partners and community members who have chosen not to repost or share the footage out of respect for Iryna’s family,” Mayor Vi Lyles posted on X Saturday.

Her words sparked outrage. “The Mayor’s refusal to condemn senseless, horrific, and preventable violence is as telling as it is despicable. Violent criminals, regardless of who they are or what they look like, need to be in jail,” Rep. Brad Knott (R-NC) fired back.

Police say Brown faces murder charges. The city faces a firestorm of anger — and a growing chorus demanding answers.

When CNN finally decided to cover the story, it was framed around the “political backlash.”

Fox News contributor Mark Levin blasted the media silence, saying, “This is so horrible.  So terrible.  If the roles were reversed, there would be massive media coverage and riots in the streets.  Yet barely a word from most of the media.”
