The Trump administration is moving forward with an ambitious plan to mark America’s 250th anniversary with a towering new monument just outside Washington, D.C.
Officials on Friday unveiled designs for a 250-foot triumphal arch, a neoclassical structure bearing the gold inscription “One Nation Under God” and topped with a winged Lady Liberty statue.
The proposed monument, inspired by Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, would dwarf its French counterpart and stand more than twice as tall as the nearby Lincoln Memorial.
Plans call for the structure to rise at Memorial Circle in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River and adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery — one of the nation’s most sacred burial grounds for fallen service members.
President Donald Trump has touted the project as a bold patriotic symbol, reportedly calling it “the biggest one of all” as the country prepares for its semiquincentennial celebrations this summer.
But the proposal is already facing pushback.
A group of veterans has filed suit to block construction, arguing the massive structure could obstruct views of gravesites and disrupt the solemn character of the cemetery grounds.
The design firm Harrison Design submitted official renderings to the Interior Department and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, kicking off what is expected to be a contentious review process.
Supporters argue the arch would serve as a lasting tribute to American unity and strength at a milestone moment in the nation’s history.
Critics counter that its scale, location, and symbolism risk overshadowing — both literally and figuratively — the legacy of those buried nearby.
