Emotional testimony on the Hill…

Jessica Gorman, the mother of 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago freshman Sheridan Grace Gorman, testified Tuesday before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement at a hearing titled “Sanctuary Policies: Victims’ Perspectives.”

Her daughter was shot and killed on March 19, 2026, at Tobey Prinz Beach in Chicago’s Rogers Park while walking with friends; the man charged with the murder is Jose Medina, a Venezuelan national who entered the United States illegally in 2023 and remained on the streets despite an outstanding warrant amid Chicago’s sanctuary policies.

In her remarks, Gorman said she did not understand why only one side of Congress appeared to prioritize American children.

“I don’t understand why it’s only the REPUBLICAN side that cares about our American children!” she stated. She described lawmakers’ responses to victims’ families as condolences followed by qualifications: “Basically what you just did, what you said was, ‘I’m so sorry for your loss. I have a daughter too. I have a son. I feel your pain…’ You DON’T feel my pain. Because the next words out of your mouth were, ‘BUT.’ There’s no ‘BUT’ when your child is in a coffin!”

Gorman offered to buy Congress a bench for lawmakers to sit with her and explain their priorities, saying, “I’m going to buy Congress the bench. And they can come and sit and hold my hand and look me in the eye and explain to me why illegal immigrants are more important than my daughter.” In her written testimony, she emphasized that her daughter was the kind of child who “stalked the buddy bench” in kindergarten to ensure no one felt lonely and urged Congress to enforce laws protecting American citizens first.

Gorman also took aim at sanctuary cities, stressing she “deserves an explanation” for why failed Democratic Party policies sent her daughter “to her grave.”
