A new media audit is putting Big Tech’s “neutral platform” claims under a harsh spotlight.
According to a study by AllSides, major news aggregators — including Google News, Apple News, Bing News, and Yahoo News — overwhelmingly favor left-leaning outlets in the stories they surface to users.
The numbers are stark.
Just 1% of articles in non-customizable sections of Google News came from right-leaning outlets, compared to 73% from sources classified as left-leaning, the study found.
Apple News showed a similar imbalance.
Only 2% of its curated content came from right-leaning outlets, while roughly 50% came from the left, according to the audit, which focused on sections users cannot personalize.
Microsoft’s Bing News and Yahoo News followed the same pattern.
Bing drew just 5% of its content from conservative sources versus 72% from left-leaning outlets.
Yahoo’s split came in at 2% right-leaning and 53% left-leaning.
The takeaway from the report: a consistent, cross-platform tilt.
Julie Mastrine, who leads AllSides’ media bias ratings, warned the implications go beyond simple editorial preference.
“By failing to provide a balanced newsfeed to their users, the aggregators are effectively preventing Americans from considering multiple views and thinking independently,” Mastrine said.
She added that the scale of these platforms — reaching tens of millions of users — makes the impact “sinister and immeasurable.”
The findings could carry political consequences.
With the White House and regulators already signaling interest in cracking down on perceived anti-conservative bias in tech, the report may add fuel to that push.
Critics argue the data undermines years of assurances from tech companies that their platforms operate as neutral distributors of information.
Mark Grabowski, a digital ethics expert at Adelphi University, called the findings “damning.”
“These companies have spent years insisting their platforms are neutral,” Grabowski said. “This data makes that claim very hard to take seriously.”
He added that the imbalance is especially notable given the availability of “credible right-leaning journalism.”
