Washington D.C. has declared a public emergency due to migrant bus arrivals, blaming border state governors Greg Abbott (R-TX) and Doug Ducey (R-AZ) for sending nearly 10,000 migrants to the nation’s capital.
From The New York Post:
The declaration authorizes Bowser to establish an Office of Migrant Services, which will provide support and services to migrants being sent to Washington DC from Texas and Arizona.
The district will initially allocate $10 million for the creation of the new office and will seek reimbursement from the federal government, according to the announcement.
“This is what we know. The crisis at the border is not lessening. It’s getting worse,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a press conference, adding that she expects “hundreds of more buses” to arrive in the fall.
“In many ways, the governors of Texas and Arizona have turned us into a border town. We don’t know how long this will take to resolve. We don’t know how long they will continue bussing,” Washington DC Councilmember Brianne Nadeau said.
Prominent GOP voices were quick to remind D.C. lawmakers that it’s President Joe Biden —not border state governors who are to blame for the crisis at the southern border. Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert responded on Twitter.
“Actually, Joe Biden did that.”

The Pentagon has twice rejected Mayor Bowser’s request for National Guard assistance with the migrant arrivals.
“The DCNG has no specific experience in or training for this kind of mission or unique skills for providing facility management, feeding, sanitation or ground support,” Defense Department executive secretary Kelly Bulliner Holly wrote in a letter to Bowser.
“Approval of this request would also result in a substantial readiness impact to the DCNG,” Holly continued. “Devoting the personnel or the facility for such an extended mission would force the cancellation or disruption of military training.”
