A potential breakthrough in the Iran conflict is now sitting on President Donald Trump’s desk.
According to Axios, U.S. and Iranian negotiators have reportedly reached a 60-day memorandum of understanding that would extend the current ceasefire and launch negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program. But despite months of diplomacy and repeated near-misses, Trump has yet to give the deal his final approval.
According to U.S. officials involved in the talks, the proposed agreement would mark the most significant diplomatic progress since the conflict began.
“This is an agreement to get everybody to the table. We will work out the details in the negotiations,” one U.S. official said.
The framework was largely finalized by Tuesday, according to American negotiators. U.S. officials claim Iranian representatives later informed mediators that the necessary approvals had been secured in Tehran and that they were prepared to move forward. Iran has not publicly confirmed that claim.
The proposal now awaits Trump’s decision.
After receiving a briefing from negotiators, Trump reportedly told mediators he wanted additional time to review the arrangement before signing off.
“The president relayed to the mediators that he wants a couple of days to think about it,” a U.S. official said.
