Disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner surrendered himself to federal authorities on Monday, officially beginning his 21-month jail sentence for exchanging sexually explicit material with a 15-year-old girl in January of 2016.
The New York liberal turned himself in to the Bureau of Prison’s Federal Medical Center in Devens Massachusetts, approximately 40 miles west of Boston.
Weiner will serve nearly two years after pleading guilty to “sexting” a teenager in May; re-igniting a nearly 5 year old scandal after other allegations of sexual misconduct swirled around the one-time NYC Mayoral hopeful.
Federal prosecutors say Weiner’s prior actions “suggests a dangerous level of denial and lack of self-control,” reports CBS News.
The former Congressman’s incarceration is the end of a prolonged fall from grace; making national headlines for years over a host of sexual accusations and admissions, including a secret social media account operating under the pseudonym “Carlos Danger.”
The ensuing scandal directly impacted the 2016 presidential election, with Weiner’s then-wife and longtime Democratic insider playing a major role in Hillary Clinton’s campaign to take the White House.
