White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders quickly shut down CNN’s Jim Acosta on Monday, cutting off the cable news correspondent as he accused President Trump of inciting a “culture war” when he criticized NFL players who don’t stand for the national anthem.
CNN’s senior White House correspondent pressed Huckabee Sanders over the President’s comments, asking why he was “going after African-American athletes.”
“Why is it that the President over the weekend is going after African-American athletes?” asked Acosta. “Then this morning, he’s putting out a tweet praising NASCAR, which obviously is geared towards a different demographic, and the way they stand and respect and honor the flag. Is he trying to wage something of a culture war?”
“Not at all,” fired-back Sanders. “The President’s not talking about race. The President’s talking about pride in our country.”
“What you saw yesterday were players and fans of all races joining together as Americans to honor our service members. That’s what the President is talking about, that’s what his focus is on,” she added.
