Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was caught on a hot microphone praising his relationship with President Trump, adding that the “President likes me!” and saying he advised the Commander-in-Chief to continue to reach out to democratic legislators.
Sen. Schumer can be heard discussing his recent dinner meeting with the President, speaking with a democratic colleague over his conversations with President Trump regarding DACA legislation.
“Sorry, just got here. Anything new?” asked Schumer, adding “He likes us! He likes me, anyway,” with a slight laugh.
“Here’s what I told him,” Schumer continued. “I said, ‘Mr. President, you’re much better off if you can sometimes step right and sometimes step left. If you have to step just in one direction, you’re boxed.’ He gets that.”
President Trump has increasingly signaled his willingness to reach across the aisle to advance his agenda; side-stepping Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, both of whom seem unable to pass significant legislation the President campaigned on.
Wednesday night, the President met with both Senate Minority Leader Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to strike a deal that would extend the DACA program, but also significantly beef-up security along the United States’ southern border with Mexico.
