THANKS OBAMA! Contractors Claim Millions in Unpaid Costs From Obama Presidential Center Ahead of Opening

posted by Hannity Staff - 6.17.26

As the Obama Presidential Center prepares to welcome visitors this week, some of the contractors who helped build the sprawling Chicago campus say they are still fighting to recover millions of dollars they believe they are owed.

The disputes have created financial strain for several firms that participated in the project, including businesses that were expected to benefit from the center’s commitment to hiring local and minority-owned contractors.

Owners interviewed by Fox News Digital said the project became far more expensive and time-consuming than originally anticipated. They pointed to years of revisions, shifting construction requirements, scheduling setbacks and compensation disagreements that they say remain unresolved.

Several contractors described spending years trying to recoup mounting costs while continuing work on the project.

One of those firms is Adamson Plumbing. Owner Mike Owen told Fox News Digital that his company has absorbed nearly $4 million in losses connected to the project.

According to Owen, repeated changes to project plans and extended construction timelines dramatically increased labor expenses and overhead costs, leaving his company struggling to recover financially.

“This is not something a small business can simply absorb and move on from,” Owen said.

The financial impact has been severe enough, Owen said, that layoffs could eventually become necessary if the company is unable to recover the disputed funds.

He also described the personal burden of the ongoing fight.

“I haven’t had eight hours or six hours sleep in over a year,” Owen told the outlet. “I’m cooked emotionally. I feel like an aluminum can that’s been thrown in front of a steamroller. We’re crushed. And I have to fight for my company and for my people.”

Fox News Digital reported that multiple contractors involved with the project claim losses ranging from several hundred thousand dollars to tens of millions.

Some contractors declined to speak publicly, citing confidentiality agreements or concerns that criticizing a project as prominent as the Obama Presidential Center could damage future business opportunities.

The allegations arrive just days after separate reporting raised questions about the Obama Foundation’s financial reserves. A reserve fund, once promoted as a safeguard against potential project-related financial issues, reportedly contains about $1 million despite earlier references to a much larger financial backstop.

The Obama Presidential Center, a 19-acre campus on Chicago’s South Side, has long been presented as a cornerstone of former President Barack Obama’s legacy and an economic development catalyst for surrounding neighborhoods.
