President Donald Trump on Wednesday forcefully denied reports that the United States would participate in or encourage a massive reconstruction fund for Iran as part of the emerging ceasefire framework between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking with Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy, Trump dismissed claims that Gulf allies could contribute as much as $300 billion to rebuild Iran under a proposed arrangement tied to the ongoing negotiations.
“It’s false. False,” Trump said when asked about the reports.
The president stressed that the United States would not contribute any taxpayer money to such an effort.
“You can invest if you want. I mean, what am I going to do, say nobody’s ever allowed to invest? No, we’re not investing. We’re not putting up $0.10,” Trump said.
Trump added that private parties or foreign governments are free to make their own decisions, but emphasized that Washington has no reconstruction fund and is not participating in one.
“We are not investing in it and we do not have a fund,” Trump said.
When Doocy pressed the president on whether he was encouraging Gulf nations to finance a reconstruction package for Iran, Trump answered plainly.
“No, I’m not.”
The president suggested any future investment decisions would depend heavily on Iran’s conduct following the ceasefire.
“If they do it, fine. But I would say they won’t be doing it for a while until they find out the behavior. It’s a behavior thing, but we are not investing. That’s a false story that got picked up incorrectly,” Trump said.
Trump also clarified that the document currently under discussion is not a finalized peace agreement but rather a memorandum of understanding that could still change substantially before any formal signing ceremony.
“No, it’s not final. It’s a memorandum of understanding,” Trump said.
The president also delivered a stark warning that military operations could resume if Iran fails to comply with the terms being negotiated.
“If I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head,” Trump said.
Trump doubled down moments later, arguing that Tehran’s behavior over the past four decades justified maintaining pressure.
“If they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack on the middle of their head, ok? Because they’ve misbehaved for 47 years.”
