Nearly two years after the debate that upended the 2024 presidential race, former first lady Jill Biden is offering a startling new account of what she thought was happening as millions of Americans watched then-President Joe Biden struggle on stage against Donald Trump.
In a recent interview with CBS, Jill Biden said she wasn’t merely embarrassed or disappointed by her husband’s performance. She was terrified.
“I wasn’t horrified, I was frightened,” she said.
“I had never, ever seen Joe like that before or since. I don’t know what happened. As I watched it, I said, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke.’ It scared me to death.”

The admission is likely to reignite debate over Biden’s condition during the June 2024 showdown, a debate widely viewed as a turning point in the election.
Throughout the event, Biden appeared hoarse, struggled to complete thoughts, lost his train of thought multiple times and delivered answers that left even many Democratic allies alarmed.
The performance triggered a political firestorm that ultimately led to Biden ending his reelection campaign weeks later.
President Donald Trump quickly seized on Jill Biden’s remarks Friday, posting a lengthy response on Truth Social.
“Jill Biden is now out there finally admitting that she did NOT know what went wrong with Sleepy Joe during our spectacular, and highly rated, 2024 Presidential Debate,” Trump wrote.
Trump noted that Jill Biden said she feared her husband was suffering a stroke and questioned why she did not intervene if she genuinely believed he was experiencing a medical emergency.
“She said that she thought he was having a ‘stroke,’ and various other really bad things, and yet never rushed onto the stage to help her troubled husband, as any good wife would do,” Trump wrote.
The president also suggested his own debate performance may have contributed to Biden’s collapse on stage.
“In other words, as many have asked, did my strong performance in that debate cause him to plain and simple ‘choke,’ leading to his ignominious defeat, or were other reasons the cause?” Trump wrote.
“Nobody else knows the answer to that, BUT I DO!!!”
Jill Biden’s comments stand in sharp contrast to the public messaging from the White House and Biden campaign immediately following the debate.
In the hours after the event, Democratic officials publicly insisted Biden had merely suffered from a bad night, while allies dismissed growing concerns about his fitness for office.
Jill Biden herself appeared alongside her husband at an Atlanta campaign stop after the debate and praised his performance.
“Joe, you did such a great job,” she told him at the time. “You answered every question. You knew all the facts.”
Her latest remarks, however, suggest that behind the scenes, she was experiencing something very different.
