SUNSHINE SHAKEUP: DeSantis Unveils Map That Could Hand GOP 4 Seats

posted by Hannity Staff - 4.27.26

A fresh redistricting fight is brewing in Florida — with potential national consequences.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday released a tentative congressional map that could net Republicans up to four additional House seats, as the state heads into a rare mid-decade redistricting push.

The proposal targets several Democratic-leaning districts in central and South Florida, while leaving cities like Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, and West Palm Beach as reliably blue strongholds.

“Florida got shortchanged in the 2020 Census, and we’ve been fighting for fair representation ever since,” DeSantis said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Our population has since grown dramatically, and we have moved from a Democrat majority to a 1.5 million Republican advantage,” he added. “Drawing maps based on race, which is reflected in our current congressional districts, is unconstitutional and should be prohibited.”

DeSantis has called a special legislative session beginning Tuesday to consider the new boundaries, an unusual step outside the typical once-a-decade redistricting cycle following the U.S. Census.

A source familiar with the plan told Fox News Digital the effort was in motion well before a recent redistricting fight in Virginia, where voters approved changes that could shift the political balance there.

If enacted, the Florida map could further cement the state’s rightward shift and bolster Republicans’ position in the U.S. House heading into the 2026 midterms.

Currently, Republicans hold 20 of Florida’s 28 House seats, with Democrats holding seven and one seat vacant following the resignation of former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.
