Recently on Long Island, Paws of War hosted its Hearts and Heroes Gala, honoring American service members and advocates whose actions reflect service, sacrifice, and compassion.
Among those recognized were five active duty soldiers, including two Purple Heart recipients from the New York area who were wounded during a deadly Iranian-backed attack on a U.S. base in 2024. While deployed, those soldiers rescued dogs they later reunited with stateside through Paws of War.
Also honored was Air Force veteran Nick Martucci, who made the rare journey to Korea to bring home his former military working dog, Remco, after five years apart. And Paws of War team member Nikki Dawson was recognized for helping rescue more than 200 dogs from severe conditions and supporting international missions to reunite animals with the service members who love them.
Paws of War is committed to helping both ends of the leash — supporting veterans, service members, and the animals they rely on. For more information, visit www.pawsofwar.org.
