A Florida Democrat walked away before the gavel came down.
Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned Tuesday just before a House Ethics hearing, as a yearslong probe found serious campaign finance violations and alleged misuse of federal funds.
In her resignation letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Cherfilus-McCormick said that “after careful reflection and prayer,” she had concluded it was in the best interest of her constituents and the House to step aside.
She said she wanted to support a smooth transition and continuity of service for Florida’s 20th Congressional District.
Committee leaders had already released materials laying out the case against her, after a two-year investigation that reviewed more than 33,000 documents, issued 59 subpoenas, and interviewed 28 witnesses.
At the heart of the case: allegations she diverted COVID-era relief funds into her campaign and personal spending. Prosecutors say more than $5 million was misused; she’s pleaded not guilty and denies wrongdoing. The ethics probe is separate, but closely intertwined.
Cherfilus-McCormick blasted the committee process on her way out, calling it unfair and arguing that she was being denied the chance to fully defend herself while her criminal case remains pending.
Reuters reported that she accused the panel of playing “political games” after it refused her new lawyer’s request for more time.
Her resignation heads off what could have become one of the House’s most serious disciplinary fights in years.
AP reported that the committee was preparing to recommend sanctions and that an expulsion vote was a real possibility, an extraordinary step that Congress uses only rarely.
The move also adds another vacancy to an already razor-thin House.
Before Tuesday’s resignation, the official House Press Gallery listed the chamber at 217 Republicans, 214 Democrats, one Independent, and three vacancies.
Cherfilus-McCormick’s exit reduces Democrats by one more seat, tightening the margin further as both parties brace for the 2026 midterms.

And the broader ethics cloud over the House is not lifting.
Cherfilus-McCormick’s departure follows the recent resignations of former Reps. Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales amid sexual misconduct allegations, while Rep. Cory Mills remains under House ethics scrutiny over allegations that include sexual misconduct.
