President Donald Trump said the war with Iran is “very close to over,” while warning the U.S. military could cripple the regime’s core infrastructure in a matter of hours if negotiations collapse.
“I think it’s close to over. I view it as very close to being over,” Trump said in a Wednesday interview with Maria Bartiromo.

But the optimism came paired with a blunt show of force.
“We could take out every one of their bridges in one hour. We could take out every one of their power plants, electric power plants, in one hour,” Trump said, underscoring the scale of U.S. military capability.
The president insisted restraint — not capability — is what’s holding Washington back.
“We don’t want to do that, because some day you have to rebuild,” he said, noting the long-term cost of destroying a nation’s infrastructure. “It takes you 10 years to rebuild the bridge… it takes a long time.”
Still, Trump argued Iran has already been pushed to the brink.
“We’ve obliterated them,” he said. “I don’t know how much longer they can survive… because they’ve been hit very hard.”
The comments come as U.S. officials signal that a second round of cease-fire talks could resume within days, raising the possibility of a negotiated end to the conflict after weeks of escalating strikes.
Trump framed the war itself as unavoidable.
“I had to go to a war,” he said, arguing that without U.S. action, Tehran would already possess a nuclear weapon. “If I didn’t do that right now, you would have Iran with a nuclear weapon.”
That claim reflects longstanding concerns in Washington about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, which have driven years of sanctions, diplomacy, and now direct military confrontation.
The president doubled down on the pressure campaign, suggesting Iran’s ability to recover has been severely degraded.
“If I pulled up stakes right now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild that country,” he said. “And we’re not finished.”
Yet even as he highlighted the devastation, Trump pointed to a potential off-ramp.
“We’ll see what happens,” he said. “I think they want to make a deal very badly.”
