Another mainstream media mob hit.
According to the New York Post, CBS News is shutting down its nearly century-old radio division, wiping out the unit and all of its jobs as part of a broader round of layoffs reshaping the network’s newsroom.
CBS News Radio — a fixture of American broadcasting since the days of Edward R. Murrow — will officially sign off May 22, according to staff briefed Friday by division heads Bari Weiss and Tom Cibrowski.
The closure comes amid a sweeping overhaul under owner David Ellison, with roughly 6% of the CBS News workforce — about 60 employees — being cut.
Executives pointed to industry shifts and financial pressure as the driving force behind the decision.
“A shift in radio station programming strategies, coupled with challenging economic realities, has made it impossible to continue the service,” they told employees, calling it “a necessary decision” but “not an easy one.”
CBS News Radio spanned generations — from Murrow’s World War II reporting to the long-running “World News Roundup,” one of the most enduring programs in broadcast history.
Executives said affected employees would be treated “with care and respect” as operations wind down.
