HOUSE SHOWDOWN: Dozens Of Democrats Vote Against Resolution Labeling Iran Top Terror Sponsor

Dozens of House Democrats voted Thursday against a resolution reaffirming that Iran remains the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism, highlighting divisions within the party as the U.S. conflict with Tehran intensifies.

The nonbinding measure, introduced by Brian Mast, passed overwhelmingly in a 372–53 vote. Every vote against the resolution came from Democrats, while two Democratic lawmakers voted “present.”

Among those opposing the measure were all four members of the progressive group known as the “Squad,” including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib.

The resolution states that the Islamic Republic of Iran “remains the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism” and provides support to militant groups including Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.

It also asserts that Iran “poses a direct and persistent threat to the United States and is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American citizens.”

Citing Pentagon figures, the resolution notes that Iranian-backed proxy militias were responsible for the deaths of at least 603 U.S. service members in Iraq — roughly one in six American combat fatalities during the conflict.

The measure also references concerns about Iran’s nuclear program, noting statements by Rafael Grossi that Tehran has accumulated large stockpiles of enriched uranium and limited access to certain nuclear-related sites.

Although the resolution passed with strong bipartisan support, several Democrats argued it was unnecessary and politically motivated.

Lateefah Simon, who voted against the measure, said the resolution contained inaccuracies and was intended to justify the administration’s military actions against Iran.

“Republicans in Congress are not only surrendering their constitutional duties — they are also playing politics with a resolution reaffirming Iran as a leading state sponsor of terrorism,” Simon wrote on Facebook. “That is already U.S. policy.”

Simon said she strongly opposes the Iranian government’s actions against its own citizens but warned that the resolution could be used to justify expanding the war.

“This resolution does nothing to advance their freedom and instead puts Congress on record as giving the administration further pretext for a war that should not have been started in the first place,” she wrote.

Supporters of the resolution argued that the measure was an important reaffirmation of U.S. policy toward Iran.

Julie Fedorchak said a recent classified briefing from top national security officials — including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine — underscored the seriousness of the threat posed by Iran.

“Standing with our allies and confronting state-sponsored terrorism is essential to protecting Americans and advancing stability around the world,” Fedorchak said. “This resolution sends a strong message that we will not ignore or excuse the regime’s extremist actions.”
