A protest over federal immigration sweeps halted the New Orleans City Council meeting for roughly 30 minutes on Thursday, ending only after police officers removed about 30 demonstrators.
Council President JP Morrell opened the meeting with a warning that he would cut the microphone on any public comments unrelated to the agenda.
Minutes later, he moved to suspend public comment altogether as protesters demanded that city officials declare all city-owned property “ICE-free” zones where Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and other federal personnel would be barred from staging operations.
Ultimately, the protesters had to be forcibly removed.
