Elon Musk urged his X followers this week to cancel their Netflix subscriptions over a controversy tied to an animated show and its creator. Netflix is now on track for its worst week since April, erasing about $20 billion in value.
“Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids,” Musk posted Wednesday on X, responding to an image accusing the streaming service of pushing a “transgender woke agenda.”
The backlash centers on “Dead End: Paranormal Park,” a Netflix animated show featuring a transgender character. The series ended in 2023 after two seasons.
Musk also engaged with posts highlighting comments allegedly made by the show’s creator, Hamish Steele, that critics claimed “mocked” the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Steele responded on Bluesky: “It’s probably going to be a very odd day.” He also reposted writer Jack Bernhardt’s defense of “Dead End” as “a brilliant show about kind, wonderful characters.”
Conservative activist Robby Starbuck joined in, accusing Netflix of promoting ideology “hateful to White Americans.” In one post he wrote, “No one should give this woke company another dime.”
Shares are down about 5% so far this week.
