A sniper opened fire early Wednesday as immigrants were being led into a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, killing at least two people and wounding a third, authorities said.
The unidentified gunman fired from a rooftop just before 7 a.m. local time, targeting detainees being escorted into the building, Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News.
There were “three fatalities, potentially detainees,” McLaughlin said, adding that the sniper was later found dead on a nearby roof.
The dead did not include law enforcement, but there are “other injuries, with some in critical condition,” McLaughlin said — calling it “monstrous.”
The shooter opened fire while the detainees were being transferred and the portcullis to the facility was open, Fox News reported, citing authorities.
The shooter is reportedly dead.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem shared an update on X:
“There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas @ICEgov Field Office. Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities. The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gun shot wound. While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families.”
