According to a new Gallup Poll, Americans are more optimistic about the economy now than they have been in the last seven years.
Gallup found that 53% of adults in an early January poll expected economic growth over the next six months—the highest level since the question was first asked in 2019.
Additionally, 61% anticipated stock market gains, both figures rebounding from seven-year lows in last year’s survey. The poll also recorded seven-year highs in expectations for lower interest rates (41%), declining inflation (33%), and reduced unemployment (38%) by June.
“Part of this optimism stems from Republicans expecting things to improve under a Republican rather than Democratic president,” said Jeffrey M. Jones, a Gallup senior editor. “But the broader improvements in Americans’ outlook may also reflect their confidence in Trump’s ability to handle the economy.”
Gallup conducted the survey shortly before Trump took office on Jan. 20. On Saturday, the president issued an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tax on Chinese goods, set to take effect Tuesday.
Trump has already agreed to pause the tariffs on Mexico for one month in exchange for 10,000 Mexican soldiers deployed to protect the border.
Trump’s TRUTH Social post below:
I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country. We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a “deal” between our two Countries.
