Scott Jennings cut through CNN’s numbers game with one sharp question: How much potential voter fraud is acceptable?
The conservative commentator challenged host Abby Phillip during a heated “NewsNight” debate over New Jersey’s admission that a software error improperly placed roughly 6,600 people who identified themselves as noncitizens on the state’s voter rolls.
Fewer than 400 later cast ballots, according to Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s preliminary findings.
Phillip argued that the episode did not demonstrate widespread voter fraud, pointing to New Jersey’s 6.8 million registered voters.
Manhattan Institute official Jesse Arm called the registrations a widespread problem, prompting Phillip to repeatedly press him for a numerical definition of “widespread.”
That was when Jennings stepped in.
“What’s your tolerance for this?” Jennings asked.
“Hold on, this is not about tolerance,” Phillip replied. “This is about, is it widespread, or is it something that is relatively rare, Scott?”
Jennings did not budge.
“You’re pounding him over the word widespread,” he said. “I just want to ask you, what is your tolerance for any fraud at all?”
When Phillip continued pressing for his definition, Jennings gave a direct answer.
“My bar is, I want no tolerance,” he said. “I have zero tolerance for this.”
Jennings also rejected the suggestion that he was unconcerned about eligible citizens being wrongly removed from voter rolls.
“I don’t have tolerance for any mistakes in the electoral system, including putting non-citizens on the rolls,” he said.
New Jersey has attributed the registrations to a software failure rather than a coordinated effort by the individuals involved. The state is investigating who voted and whether those people were eligible when their ballots were cast.
