Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will step down as Labour leader and prime minister after a growing internal rebellion made clear he no longer had the confidence of his own party.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he accepted that many Labour lawmakers no longer viewed him as the right person to lead the party into the next general election.
“Every decision I’ve taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to his majesty the king this morning to inform him of my decision,” Starmer said.
The embattled prime minister will remain in office on a caretaker basis while Labour conducts a leadership contest expected to conclude before Parliament returns in September.
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,” he said.
Starmer said Labour’s National Executive Committee will begin the leadership process next month.
“I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with nominations opening on the 9th of July and completed by the summer recess. In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September. I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete. And I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power.”
The resignation caps weeks of political turmoil that rocked Britain’s governing party following disastrous local election results, ministerial departures, and increasing calls from Labour lawmakers for a change in leadership.
Labour suffered one of its worst local election performances in recent memory, reportedly losing roughly 1,500 council seats and surrendering control of more than 25 local councils. The losses were driven in part by surging support for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, which made significant gains in traditional Labour territory, while the Green Party also expanded its foothold in several urban areas.
